With a case production often under 1,000, Voliero remains one of Montalcino’s most limited-production labels. This was the standout wine of the day at a recent tasting where we assessed over 40 new releases. An exciting discovery from Tuscany, Voliero comes from a cool, high-elevation site planted to 15–25-year-old vines rooted in clay soils. The passion project of longtime Uccelliera winemaker Andrea Cortonesi, it debuted just 11 vintages ago. A cool fermentation for nuance and complexity is followed by 30 months of maturation in Slavonian and French oak casks. With a tiny production of only 650 cases, Voliero remains highly limited. The wine is lithe and elegant, showing notes of morello cherry, blood orange, and velvety tannins. A wine that shines solo, while bringing remarkable depth to the table. Highly recommend.
About Voliero
Voliero is the passion project of Andrea Cortonesi, longtime winemaker at Uccelliera, born from his desire to explore the subtler, more elegant side of Montalcino. Sourced from cool, high-elevation vineyards planted to 15–25-year-old vines in clay soils, Voliero wines emphasize finesse over power, showing lifted aromatics, vibrant acidity, and refined structure. Cortonesi employs a gentle, cool fermentation to preserve nuance and complexity, followed by extended maturation in both Slavonian and French oak casks to enhance depth without overwhelming the fruit. With a case production often under 1,000, Voliero remains one of Montalcino’s most limited-production labels. What sets it apart is its combination of rarity, terroir-driven purity, and Andrea’s signature craftsmanship—producing Brunellos and Rossos that are at once graceful, expressive, and unmistakably tied to place.
