Dakota Shy ‘Napa Valley’ Cabernet Sauvignon 2021
This Cabernet is composed predominantly from hillside vineyards on volcanic and sedimentary soils, offering an excellent combination of lushness and power. The sites are farmed by such powerhouses as Jim Barbour, Mike Wolf, and Phil Coturri. Tom takes a balanced approach with 18 months aging in French oak, 70% of which is new. The final blend is 96% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Cabernet Franc. Cassis and plum compote lead the way to notes of baking chocolate and thyme. While the wine is dense, the texture is velvety with a soft finish.

Dakota Shy ‘Atlas’ Cabernet Sauvignon 2021
‘Atlas’ Cabernet, named for the Titan god who held the weight of the world on his shoulders, is the most powerful expression in the Dakota Shy lineup. The fruit is sourced from two sites-- a 900-foot elevation hillside vineyard with prime Southwest exposure in Calistoga and a valley floor vineyard in Oakville with classic, deep alluvial soils, offering incredible textural richness. The glass presents intense dark berry on the nose with wild cooked herbs followed by a dense palate of black currant mineral and thyme. The blend spent 18 months in 70% new French oak and is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. 450 cases were produced.

Detert ‘Oakville’ Cabernet Franc 2022
This 100% Cabernet Franc is powerful and full-bodied, with layers of cassis, blood orange, violets, and dark fruit. Rich and dense, it boasts refined tannins and a long, complex finish with notes of licorice, dried herbs, and bittersweet chocolate. An exceptional expression of this historic vineyard. 250 cases were produced.

Detert ‘Oakville’ Cabernet Sauvignon 2022
A vibrant blend of currant, red cherry, boysenberry, herbs, and graphite, accented by bittersweet cocoa. The 2022 vintage offers classic elegance and structure, with a refined core of flavors over a beautifully balanced frame. Silky tannins enhance its purity and precision, making it both complex and delicious. Composed of 91% Cabernet Sauvignon and 9% Cabernet Franc, only 300 cases were produced.

About Winemaker Tom Garret
Tom Garrett’s Napa Valley roots run deep. In 1954, his grandmother purchased the family’s portion of the To Kalon Vineyard for $750 per acre. Tom and his brother John grew up among the vines, carrying their passion for wine into adulthood. Tom got his start making small batches of Cabernet Franc in the family garage, and his career took off when he joined Turley Wine Cellars in 1999. He later honed his craft at Joseph Phelps, Robert Mondavi, and Revana Family Vineyards. Since 2013, he has focused exclusively on Detert Family Vineyards and Dakota Shy. Tom is the epitome of hands-on—when we called the Dakota Shy winery, he picked up the phone himself. That personal touch carries through to the wines, which are crafted with soul.
