This newest vintage of Salus comes from Staglin’s estate vineyard in west Rutherford. Although we think of some of the most distinct Cabernets as coming from this part of Napa Valley, this nook in the Rutherford bench is the perfect spot for growing Grand Cru estate Chardonnay, which is exactly what Staglin is doing today. It is a refreshing, inviting 2019 that offers ‘tropically infused golden citrus surrounding a tight core of fresh green pome fruits. A rich, bright lemon curd and honeycomb entry melts into a lively and linear expression of freshly cut Granny Smith apples spiced by vanilla, nutmeg and a whisper of white pepper given lift and light by hints of lemongrass and banana blossom.’ While enjoyable now, it will benefit with a few more years in bottle. Named after the Roman goddess of health and wellbeing, the Staglin family donates 100% of the proceeds from the sales of these wines to brain health research and treatment programs, a cause that is very near and dear to their hearts. Over the past 22 years, they have raised over $380 million dollars for their non-profit organization, One Mind.
