Sine Qua Non remains the ultimate outlier in California winemaking, a project defined by the singular vision and restless creativity of Manfred and Elaine Krankl. "Distenta V" is the fifth installment of their Syrah-focused series, primarily sourced from their impeccably farmed estate vineyards: The Third Twin, Eleven Confessions, and Cumulus. The 2023 vintage, benefiting from a remarkably long and cool growing season, resulted in a wine of immense depth and aromatic complexity that captures the vibrant energy of the year. It opens with a hedonistic bouquet of crème de cassis, cracked black pepper, and scorched earth, followed by a palate that is voluminous yet strikingly lithe. The texture is pure silk, layering dark berries and violets with savory notes of tapenade and woodsmoke, all framed by the polished, fine-grained tannins that are a hallmark of the Krankls' obsessive attention to detail. As with all SQN releases, the production is minuscule and the presentation is a work of art.
