Domaine Vincent Girardin ‘Vieilles Vignes’ Volnay 2020
Volnay is often considered the “Chambolle of the South,” the most elegant and perfumed expression of Pinot Noir in the Côte de Beaune, prized for its floral aromatics and silky tannins. Vincent Girardin’s ‘Vieilles Vignes’ bottling, sourced from 40+ year-old vines, is a stunning example of why this village is so coveted. Under the direction of Eric Germain, the estate has pivoted toward a more elegant, terroir-driven style in recent years, and the 2020 vintage provided the perfect raw material: small berries with incredible depth and intensity. This is pure cashmere on the palate. Expect an explosion of black cherry, dried violets, and forest floor, framed by tannins that are so fine they feel nearly invisible. It has the weight and balance of a wine twice its price, offering a gentle introduction to the complexity of the 2020 reds. Highly recommended for those who value elegance over raw power.

Domaine Henri Gouges ‘Les Pruliers’ Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru 2018
For decades, Domaine Henri Gouges was known for making highly respected "vins de garde” (wines that benefited from 20 years in the cellar before opening up). But a recent generational shift has seen the estate move toward a more refined, approachable style without losing an ounce of their legendary power. These recent Gouges vintages are incredibly exciting and the best they have ever produced. ‘Les Pruliers’ is one of the most impressive 1er Crus in the village, located on the southern hillside where the soils yield wines of immense power and longevity. The sun-kissed 2018 vintage yielded a voluptuous expression of this site. It leads with dark plum, woodsmoke, and a hint of fine dark chocolate. While it has the muscular backbone you expect from Nuits-Saint-Georges, the tannins are remarkably polished and lithe, a testament to the new direction at the Domaine. This is a bottle that will age effortlessly in your cellar for many years, but it’s showing so much primary fruit right now that it’s pretty hard to resist at the moment.

Domaine Confuron-Cotetidot ‘Les Suchots’ Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru 2020
In the world of Burgundy, geography is everything. ‘Les Suchots’ is perhaps the most famous 1er Cru in Vosne-Romanée because, sandwiched between Echezeaux and Romanée-Saint-Vivant, it is literally surrounded by Grand Crus. The Confuron family are whole-cluster specialists, and their old-vine parcels (some over 100 years old) produce wines of staggering intensity. This is Pinot Noir at its most profound—deep, dark, and impossibly complex. The 2020 Suchots is a "wow" wine. Featuring whole cluster fermentation and minimal new oak, the aromatics are kaleidoscopic and explosive: spicy stems, ripe raspberries, and exotic florals. The palate is dense and vibrant, with blackcurrant fruit and a mineral vein that carries the finish washing over your palate for over a minute. This is Grand Cru quality in a 1er Cru bottle, and in a vintage like 2020, it is a must for any serious Burgundy collector.
