We love the authentic and experimental character of Matthiasson. Husband and wife Steve and Jill Matthiasson are farmers at heart, ensuring the vineyards are meticulous and allowing the wine to be a natural byproduct of the vineyard.
Planted in 2001, ‘Dead Fred Vineyard’ in Coombsville is farmed organically and harvested in multiple passes to ensure fruit is only picked when perfectly ripe. Volcanic soils offer nature minerality and structure to the wine. The Cabernet is slowly fermented at a low temperature for aromatic preservation and aged in a combination of new and used French barrique, larger demi-muid, and used Austrian foudres, making it more approachable in its youth. Dark fruits and graphite lead to an elegant mineral finish. Only 390 cases were produced.
