The small but mighty Lithology sits at the base of Howell Mountain. This pre-prohibition winery was previously owned by Bill Harlan, but is now home exclusively to Lithology, producing exceptional wines from some of the top vineyards in Napa Valley. Winemaker Matt Sands worked extensively in New Zealand and subsequently, Screaming Eagle and Bryant Estate before making Lithology his home base. The winery also employs the skills of Philippe Melka and Michel Rolland. There is no shortage of talent at this small production estate.
The 2021 ‘Beckstoffer To Kalon’ is lush on the entry with silky, but assertive tannins and notes of black plum, rosemary, and hazelnut. Aged for 22 months in 74% new French oak, the winemaking team opts for a balanced approach, allowing the incredible character of the site to shine through. We weren’t the only ones who loved this wine, judging by Decanter’s 99-point score. At a production of only 86 cases, this is a wine to grab now if you love it.
