We have been fortunate that Sean Larkin lives right up the street from our Yountville tasting room. Sean recently stopped by so we could taste his 2021 Chardonnay and we were immediately enjoyed it out of the bottle. This is the seventh vintage of Jack Larkin Chardonnay and for this release Sean was able to source exceptional fruit from Hyde Vineyard in Carneros AVA. Founded by Larry Hyde in 1979, Hyde Vineyards produces some of the most coveted grapes in Napa Valley. Consisting of over 200 planted acres on several vineyard properties in Carneros, the Hyde family sells fruit to over 35 different wineries while retaining a small quantity of vines for their estate wine program. This new release was barrel fermented in a combination of 50% new French oak and 50% neutral French oak for 15 months, this wine is kept on the lees and stirred twice monthly right up until bottling. It is medium bodied, with a plush mouthfeel and balanced acidity to round out the palate. As Sean explains, it offers “green pear, white flower, vanilla custard, and a hint of flint on entry, the palate expands with a creamy texture and a touch of butterscotch. Framed with native acidity and integrated oak, this wine leaves with a long finish.” 50 cases were produced.
