SUMO is back into the collection and 2023 was well worth the wait. SUMO is a Côte-Rôtie twist on Petite Sirah. Instead of Syrah, Helen Keplinger co-ferments Petite Sirah with Viognier and about 10% Syrah. The 2023 Sumo is a powerful yet elegant wine with aromas of blackberry, white flowers, black pepper, chocolate, juniper, and pencil shavings. The palate is rich and balanced, with silky texture, fine tannins, and lingering notes of chocolate, graphite, and bramble. The fruit all comes from Shake Ridge Vineyard in Amador County, a high elevation, volcanic site with north and east facing slopes. Enjoyable now, it will shine even more after six months of cellaring. 330 cases produced.
