What a delight it was to taste the new release Zio Tony Vineyard Chardonnay from esteemed winemaker Helen Keplinger. As soon as we put our noses in the glass, we knew we were in for a treat. We typically associate seductive aromatics with red varieties like Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon, but seductive is exactly the appropriate term for this Chardonnay. Distinct honeysuckle, jasmine, fresh-cut green apple, mandarin and crushed shells will draw you into the glass. The palate hints at salted almond and offers just enough roundness, while still maintaining tension with minerality and focus. It’s no surprise this Chardonnay is so stunning, looking to its origin.

This is the first vintage the Keplingers have had access to a distinct cool, East-facing slope of Russian River Valley’s Zio Tony Vineyard, planted to 38-year-old Wente clone on prized goldridge soil, offering excellent drainage for deep root growth. The Zio Tony Vineyard has been owned and farmed by Sonoma’s Martinelli family since 1959. After picking, the wine is barrel-fermented in Burgundy barrels, 20% of which are new. A balanced approach of 17 months barrel aging allows the lovely minerality to shine through. Only 180 cases were produced.

What began as a brand showcasing Helen Keplinger’s passion for varietals inspired by her experiences in Priorat, Spain, and travels through the Rhône Valley has evolved into a highly sought-after boutique winery. Together with her husband and winery partner, DJ Warner, Helen has built Keplinger Wines into a celebrated label known not only for its exceptional reds but also for its Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. This evolution is no surprise, given Helen’s reputation as one of Napa Valley’s most in-demand consulting winemakers. Her portfolio includes crafting site-specific, highly acclaimed Cabernets for esteemed estates such as Bryant Estate, Kerr Cellars, Kenzo Estate, Paradigm Winery, and her current role at Grace Family Vineyard.
