SUMO is back into the collection and 2021 was well worth the wait. SUMO is a Côte-Rôtie twist on Petite Sirah. Instead of Syrah, Helen Keplinger co-ferments Petite Sirah with Viognier and about 10% Syrah. The 2021 Sumo is a powerful yet elegant wine with aromas of blackberry, white flowers, black pepper, chocolate, juniper, and pencil shavings. The palate is rich and balanced, with silky texture, fine tannins, and lingering notes of chocolate, graphite, and bramble. The Petite comes from three distinct blocks: one with 80% rocky soil, yielding small, thick-skinned berries with intense aromatics and structure; another with slightly larger, thinner-skinned berries, adding juicy elegance; and a north-facing block that contributes vibrant, fresh fruit to lift the blend. Enjoyable now, it will shine even more after six months of cellaring. 175 cases produced.
What began as a brand showcasing Helen Keplinger’s passion for varietals inspired by her experiences in Priorat, Spain, and travels through the Rhône Valley has evolved into a highly sought-after boutique winery. Together with her husband and winery partner, DJ Warner, Helen has built Keplinger Wines into a celebrated label known not only for its exceptional reds but also for its Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. This evolution is no surprise, given Helen’s reputation as one of Napa Valley’s most in-demand consulting winemakers. Her portfolio includes crafting site-specific, highly acclaimed Cabernets for esteemed estates such as Bryant Estate, Kerr Cellars, Kenzo Estate, Paradigm Winery, and her current role at Grace Family Vineyard.
