Vietti Barolo DOCG 2021
Founded in the late 19th century, Vietti has evolved into a true cornerstone of the Langhe, making some of the region’s most respected wines. This bottling, formerly known as ‘Castiglione,’ has long been the gold standard for DOCG-level Barolo that drinks like a cru. The 2021 vintage is already being hailed as a modern classic, and this wine captures that energy perfectly. Sourced from over 20 different premium MGA sites, it is a brilliant mosaic of the entire Barolo zone. Expect an explosion of red cherry, crushed violets, and sweet mint, all framed by the energetic mineral precision that is the hallmark of this vintage. It is rare to find this much pedigree and complexity in a bottle that is so approachable in its youth.
G.D. Vajra Barolo 'Ravera' 2019
The Ravera vineyard in Novello has recently become the most sought-after site in the appellation, and no one understands its alpine soul better than the Vajra family. This is a wine of incredible power and tension—the result of high-elevation limestone soils and 2019’s long, slow growing season. The wine soars out of the glass with striking notes of wild raspberries, orange zest, and white pepper. The structure is athletic and saline, closing with a skyscraper-like finish that stays on your palate for minutes. This towering achievement by G.D. Vajra garnered 97 points from Wine Advocate and is a treasure for Barolo purists who value finely sculpted and precise wines.
Voliero Brunello di Montalcino 2019
With a case production often under 1,000, Voliero remains one of Montalcino’s most limited-production labels. This was the standout wine of the day at a recent tasting where we assessed over 40 new releases. An exciting discovery from Tuscany, Voliero comes from a cool, high-elevation site planted to 15–25-year-old vines rooted in clay soils. The passion project of longtime Uccelliera winemaker Andrea Cortonesi, it debuted just 11 vintages ago. A cool fermentation for nuance and complexity is followed by 30 months of maturation in Slavonian and French oak casks. With a tiny production of only 650 cases, Voliero remains highly limited. The wine is lithe and elegant, showing notes of morello cherry, blood orange, and velvety tannins. A wine that shines solo, while bringing remarkable depth to the table.
