Impensata is the newest winery with Nigel Kinsman as the winemaker, David Abreu as their viticulturist and Michel Rolland, their consulting enologist. It is comprised of two estate vineyards- the historic Engelhard Vineyard in the western hills of Calistoga and the Ciminelli Vineyard tucked into the summit of Howell Mountain at 2200 feet in elevation, which is in its 2nd leaf this year. When we visited last week, it was impressive to see their vision coming into play. The vines are growing beautifully, and the vineyard itself is stunning. In addition to the estate vineyards, Impensata is privileged to source from two legendary vineyards on Howell Mountain: Ecotone (formerly known as Thorevilos) and David Abreu’s Las Posadas. This 2018 debut vintage comes from Ecotone Vineyard and is blended with a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec from Abreu’s Las Posadas Vineyard on Howell Mountain and the Engelhard Vineyard in Calistoga, further escalating its potential to age gracefully. “Powerful and wild, yet classically sophisticated, the 2018 vintage has enthralling aromas of dried sage, mint, bittersweet chocolate, and sweet spice, followed by a structured core of lively red fruit and focused tannins.” 81 cases were produced.
