Christophe Baron’s Horsepower project, based in the Stones of Walla Walla, takes its name from vineyards still cultivated by horse—an homage to his family’s centuries-old Champagne tradition. Drawn by Washington’s potential, Christophe made it his home, bringing Old World sensibilities to this young region. ‘Sur Echalas,’ is a 2-acre vineyard at 860 ft. elevation and offers a remarkable expression of Grenache: polished yet rustic, layered with lavender, kalamata olive, dark raspberry, and savory bacon fat. The palate is rich and supple, framed by chewy tannins. Aged 15 months in neutral French oak, it lets the varietal character shine through.
