Forman Napa Valley Chardonnay 2023
There are wines we respect, and then there are wines we downright crave. At the mention of this wine, we can already begin to taste it and salivate at the thought. 2023, destined to be one of the classic Napa vintages, produced an exceptionally mineral-driven wine. This was our longest growing season on record in 20 years, so complexity is profound. The Chardonnay grapes were whole cluster pressed and fermented in Burgundy barrels, 20% of which were new. The wine was subsequently left on lees for 7 months with malolactic fermentation inhibited for ultimate freshness. Crisp green apple, sensational minerality, and bruleed pineapple are hallmarks of this bottling.
Nid Tisse 'Bentrock Vineyard' Chardonnay 2024
Nid Tissé is a brilliant Chardonnay and Pinot Noir project helmed by winemaker Marie-Laure Ammons, who seamlessly marries her French heritage with an incredible touch for crafting highly precise, terroir-driven wines from California’s most extreme coastal sites. For this stunning 2024 Chardonnay, Marie-Laure looks to the highly acclaimed Bentrock Vineyard, situated on the rugged, southwestern edge of the Sta. Rita Hills AVA. Perched high on north-facing slopes composed of ancient marine soils, shale, and fractured chert, this cold, windswept site forces the vines to struggle, yielding small berries with powerful natural acidity and deep concentration. The 2024 vintage is all about tension and old-school restraint, opening with a high-toned, sophisticated bouquet of crisp yellow apple, lemon blossom, and white peach, beautifully layered with complex nuances of crushed oyster shells, wet stone, and a delicate touch of pastry crust. On the palate, the wine delivers a striking contrast—showing a weightless, satiny texture that is immediately electrified by a racy, mouth-watering acid spine. Vibrant layers of citrus peel and green pear melt into a long, deeply persistent, saline mineral finish that cleanses the palate with laser-like focus.
Vivier 'Gap's Crown Vineyard' Chardonnay 2023
This is Stéphane Vivier's fourth vintage of Chardonnay from Gap's Crown Vineyard, tucked into the western hillsides of Sonoma Mountain, which is fanned by the cool ocean breezes that push through the Petaluma Gap. Stéphane’s block is between 980-1180 feet above sea level. The rows are located over a ridgeline with a variety of exposures. It was planted in 2004 in sandy loam with alluvial gravel, uniquely iron rich. The grape clusters are small and dense. Only 122 cases were produced.
