It’s exciting to offer Casa Piena once again. I first started working with Carmen Policy (of NFL San Francisco 49ers and Cleveland Browns fame) in supporting his 2007 debut vintage when I was with DEAN & DELUCA. We enjoyed the wines then but knew that his 14-acre Yountville vineyard was young and in due time, it would grow to become a preeminent vineyard. It was first planted by Jim Barbour and continues to be farmed under his guidance today. A decade later since his debut vintage, here we are, offering his 2016 from his library. Made from the beginning by Thomas Rivers Brown, the 2016 was a particularly giving vintage. It produced a wine defined by a wealth of riches: color, aroma, flavor and mouth feel are all recognizable to those who are intimately familiar with this wine year in and year out, but in 2016 all those authentic qualities are increasingly vivid. “The wine displays a deep purple hue with a dark garnet halo. Rich aromas of hibiscus reduction, toasted cedar bark, raspberry compote, wild violet, and eucalyptus oil emerge in waves. ¬ The palate experience is noticeably darker suggesting notes of bittersweet dark chocolate, star anise, macerated blackberries, and baking spices.” 580 cases were produced.
This is the philosophy that inspires Casa Piena, which translated from Italian literally means FULL HOUSE. The five major blocks of Policy Vineyard are named after each of Carmen’s three sons and two daughters (thus, three of a kind and a pair). As Carment explains, “This marvelous combination now includes eight grandchildren which truly does create a HOUSE that is FULL.”
