In mid-August we revisited BRAND and tasted their current offerings with new owners, Jim Bean and Christine O'Sullivan & winery director Janet Pagano. We hadn’t tried their wines in a few years so it was incredible to taste what two more years of vineyard maturity and new farming practices (biodynamic & organic) does to shape the wine in the glass. Their Reds and small production Italian varietal White is outstanding. This 2016 comes from their vineyard block, N °95 which located near the winery at 1200 feet in elevation. It is a vibrant Bordeaux-style blend. 65% Cabernet Sauvignon provides a dense core of red fruit with 30% Cabernet Franc adding aromatic grace notes and 5% Petit Verdot contributing depth to the wine. Expressive and approachable, this wine displays delicious notes of black cherry, cocoa powder, and cardamom now and will reveal additional nuances with further aging. Philippe Melka has been overseeing this wine project from the beginning and their daytime winemaker Matt Johnson, previously of Dana Estates, is hitting his stride making the best vintages of BRAND yet.
