Anne Fogerty is the assistant winemaker at Rivers Marie but on the side, she started Belharra Wines in 2013, which focuses on Pinot Noir and cool climate Syrah. Belharra is the name of a legendary surf spot located on the Basque coast off Socoa, France, where storm tides hit an underwater outcropping and cause a rare wave of immense power. Such forces, after a vast journey, create a diverse natural beauty. Anne feels like their wine philosophy mirrors the riders of these waves- patiently waiting for opportunities, understanding the contours of each current and practicing the craft with vigilance. This 2018 offers clear vibrancy that radiates from the glass. It has energy wrapped in the characteristic Las Madres Vineyard violet and spice. Savory notes with white pepper push through the front of the palate with silky tannins. Las Madres is a meticulously farmed Cool Climate Syrah vineyard situated in the Sonoma Carneros. The hillside site is aligned east–west, and nestled in a bowl. This allows for excellent ripening during the day, while benefiting from cool marine influenced temperatures at night. Day to night temperatures easily vary by 35°F. 122 cases were produced.
