Abreu Vineyards is a true cult benchmark of Napa Valley, guided by the legendary viticultural precision of David Abreu and the masterful winemaking of Brad Grimes. For years, the Thorevilos bottling was sourced from an amphitheater-like hillside vineyard that has since been renamed Ecotone Vineyard. However, starting with the 2019 vintage, David Abreu transitioned the fruit source for this marquee bottling to a new estate site nearby: the former Arns Vineyard, a historic property tucked into the foothills below Howell Mountain. The 2021 vintage showcases just how beautifully this new fruit source has locked into the Abreu program, yielding a wine of staggering depth and monumental structure that received a 100-point review from Antonio Galloni of Vinous. A Cabernet-dominant blend with significant portions of Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Merlot, it opens with a kaleidoscopic nose of crème de cassis, liquid stones, violets, and exotic spices. On the palate, the wine is jaw-droppingly broad yet energetic, framing its dense core of black fruit with ultra-fine tannins and a sense of mineral-driven tension that pays perfect homage to its new estate home.
