This special bottling marks the 20th anniversary of Sean Larkin’s Cabernet Franc. Bucking the trend to produce Cabernet Sauvignon, Sean saw the potential in one of his favorite red varietals, Cabernet Franc and first began producing it in the 1999 vintage. Sean thought that if he could produce Cabernet Franc in the style in which he appreciated it himself, it could be as expressive and focused as Cabernet Sauvignon. He also felt that Cabernet Franc had been given little attention in New World wine regions. It was serendipitous that he did focus his efforts on Cabernet Franc because wine critic, Robert Parker, tasted his first few vintages and coined them as the finest Cabernet Francs coming out of Napa Valley. This 2018, like his previous vintage, comes from Pocai Vineyard, which is just down the road from the famous Three Palms Vineyard in Calistoga. It is comprised of 93% Cabernet Franc and 7% Merlot and offers rich red fruit on the notes followed by baked blueberry and secondary notes of incense, licorice, cocoa, black cherry, and blackberry. 300 cases were produced.
