Located in the westside hills of Paso Robles Adelaida District AVA, is where Hawks Hill Vineyard lives. It is a 32-acre vineyard on Kit Kuyper’s 240-acre ranch. It provides a unique variety of soil types, slope orientations, and microclimates that are rare to find all in one vineyard. With 1000 feet of vertical elevation difference, temperatures in their vineyard can vary by as much as 20 degrees in different locations. Hawks Hill Ranch has been known in winemakers’ circles for being a great grower vineyard and with the 2015 harvest season, Kit kept some of his fruit to produce his own proprietary wine. This 2018 Red conveys the complexity of Hawks Hill Ranch’s topography with layers of character that would normally come from multiple AVA’s. The 2018 ‘Liquidity’ Red is a blend of 65% Syrah and 35% Grenache that was co-fermented with whole cluster fruit. By co-fermenting, “this process binds the wines together earlier and helps achieve a deeper crimson color. This wine was made to showcase the terroir and a true representation of the vineyard by using neutral French oak for 18 months resulting a more structured wine, with tremendous longevity and complexity,” explained Kit. This wine is still a little tight and closed, so be sure to open it a couple hours before enjoying so it can show its potential. 150 cases were produced.
