Dave Phinney, who brought to us his great wines under Orin Swift - think Papillon, Mercury Head and Prisoner - became co-founder of G.B. Crane Vineyards, a heritage vineyard located in St. Helena's west bench. It is a true testament to Dave and winemaker Kevin Fox's ability to making powerful Reds. This 2016 comes from Morisoli Vineyard in Rutherford and Milat vineyard in St. Helena and is comprised of 76% Zinfandel, 13% Charbono, 6% Grenache, 5% Petite Sirah. They consider these vineyards to be like disciples of the ancient vines of Crane, and some barrels from their G.B. Crane vineyard were included in the blend. "Balanced and inviting, the wine opens with a concentrated nose of ripe strawberries, red plum, allspice, vanilla and a touch of black licorice and cigar box. A smooth and enveloping entry of dark red fruits and creme anglaise leads to a fresh and bright mid-palate. The soft and integrated tannins finish at length with a pleasing texture of baker's chocolate." - G.B. Crane winemaking team
