2018 is the most expansive, rich, and deeply textured vintage of HGIII to date and an awesome Napa Valley Red at its price. Comprised of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah like in previous vintages, this newest offering from Hourglass showcases dark red and blue fruit notes with black cassis that immediately hit your nose and glide onto the palate. The acidity is refreshing and keeps the bold fruit notes balanced. Full-bodied, this 2018 is enjoyable when drinking now and will only continue to improve with time in the bottle. As vintner Jeff Smith says, "this landmark vintage and our winemaker, Tony Biagi's blending mastery steal the show."
With 24-acres across two estates, Hourglass is planted to all five red Bordeaux varieties. But it began as a 6-acre property that was founded by vintner Jeff Smith's father, Ned in 1976. Where an outcropping of the Maycamas mountains jutted eastward, the Napa Valley floor was pinched to a near figure eight (like an hourglass), and this unclaimed knoll of hillside lay precisely in the narrowest point in the bench of the Vaca Mountains in what is now the Calistoga AVA.
