This should be your new case-buy, party Chard! I haven’t tasted a Chardonnay of this quality that is this reasonably priced, probably ever. All of Walter Hansel’s offerings are produced using their own Russian River Valley estate vineyards and this 2016 comes from ‘The Meadows Vineyard’ which is planted entirely with the Hanzell clone in 100% François Frères barrels of which 38% are new and the rest one-year old. (François Frères is the French cooperage in Burgundy that produces some of the most sought-after oak barrels.) Generous aromas of lemon peel, white flowers and tangerine zest lead onto the palate with some nice weight and precision. This is a medium to full-bodied Chardonnay that drinks beautifully with a few minutes of time given in the glass. The critics love this wine as much as I do and have been generous with their ratings for such a great-valued Chardonnay.
