While Martin Machenzie is most known as the winemaker for renowned Neal Family Vineyards on Howell Mountain, he recently launched his own small winery, Three Furies Wines, which specializes in Pinot Noir. Martin was born and raised in New Zealand, where Pinot Noir has made great strides in the last few decades. The 2019 “Constant Vengeance” comes from Lompoc in Sta. Rita Hills AVA and specifically, the grower vineyard, Rancho La Viña. It is a 35-acre site dedicated to producing Pinot Noir. This new release opens with incredible aromatics on the nose and a vibrant crimson hue on the eyes. Medium-bodied, but with great intensity, the initially generous volume on the palate leads into firm ripe tannins that form the backbone of the wine. It is fleshed out with minerally, glycerol-like layers continuing on from the nose, building into complex flavors including dark cherries, red berries, fresh baguette crust and delicate herbs and spices. While beginning to show its potential, it shows even better after an hour decant. 120 cases were produced.
