Made by Julian Fayard, the previous head of winemaking for Philippe Melka’s winery clients including Dalla Valle, Lail Vineyards and Gemstone, this 2016 comes from three estate vineyards in Napa Valley and is juicy, lush, and delicious. It is comprised of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. We first tasted this without knowing the price and pegged it as double its retail price. "Fresh, floral and inviting, with mid-weight structure, the 2016 is a terrific choice for drinking now and over the next few years. Taplin Cellars is contiguous with the legendary Lewelling Vineyard in St Helena’s west bench and proprietor Stephen Taplin’s family has been a part of the Napa Valley landscape since 1871. When you’re driving north on Highway 29, if you make a left at the Ford car dealership before getting into St. Helena and follow the road all the way west, you will run into their vineyard. The Lewellings, the Wights and the Taplins are all relatives and while many know of the famed Lewelling Vineyard and Wight Vineyard, few know of Taplin Vineyard. With its first vintage release in 2011, Taplin Cellars has been quietly producing outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon from their estate property led by winemaker Julian Fayard. After working in Bordeaux at Ch. Lafite-Rothschild and Ch. Smith Haut-Laffite, Julien moved to Napa Valley and received his MBA at UC-Davis. From there, he got connected with winemaker Philippe Melka and ultimately became the director of winemaking for Atelier Melka, working for clients including Dalla Valle, Lail Vineyards and Gemstone for several years before taking on his own clients, including Taplin Cellars.
