We’ve been eagerly anticipating the evolution of Juan Mercado’s latest venture, RIISE, and we believe it’s quickly becoming one of the most exciting new wineries emerging from Paso Robles. After founding Realm Cellars in Napa Valley, Juan set out to achieve a new standard of excellence on the west side of Paso Robles — and RIISE is a testament to his vision. The 2021 Doyen is “modern and flashy but retains a graceful, composed nuance, with black-fruited aromas accented by toasted tobacco, turned earth and fresh herbs. The palate is ripe, plush and seamless, but as with the nose, refrains from going over the top. The finish is long and layered, with clear delineation and refinement without feeling excessively uniform.” A blend of predominately Grenache with Mourvèdre and Syrah, this is a must-try.

Winemaker Anthony Yount produces bottlings from three estate vineyards. The 2019 Jovian is from Shadow Canyon Vineyard at 1800 elevation on York Mountain, known for producing some of the most elegant and mineral-driven wines in the Paso Robles region. Tempranillo dosed with smaller portions of Petite Sirah and old-vine Graciano comprise the blend. When asked about the name ‘Jovian,’ meaning an extra-terrestrial, Juan referred to finding his footing in his new Central Coast home: “The Tempranillo is not from here and I’m not from here. Someone not from here is like an alien.”
