I had the chance to enjoy tasting this newest release from Realm Cellars last month in SF and like in previous vintages, Bard represents a great Napa Valley Red made in the classic Realm style by winemaker Benoit Touquette. The 2017 is comprised of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon with 13% Merlot and comes from phenomenal grower vineyards Beckstoffer To Kalon, Realm Stags Leap District Estate, Houyi on Pritchard Hill and Weitz on the eastern hillside of Oakville. The merlot was sourced from Blair Vineyard in Calistoga. “Bright, juicy red and black fruit with pronounced raspberry tones in the mix. There’s a nerviness to the vintage that brings energy to the wine. The Bard in 2017 is very aromatic, with good extraction and precision. The oak journey over the palate is smooth and pleasing. A vibrant yet delicate wine with verve and complexity and grippy tannins that remind us of the 2008 vintage.” – Benoit Touquette.
