The newly released 2016 Bard is comprised predominately of Cabernet Sauvignon with a touch of Petit Verdot and Merlot. It is a concentrated and focused Napa Valley Red coming from some of the best vineyard sources in Napa Valley each year with this new release coming from Farella, Blair, Houyi on Pritchard Hill, Weitz and Fortuna Vineyards. With winemaker Benoit Touquette mastering his blending skills from mentors including Michel Rolland, this wine is the quintessential example of Realm in the bottle – it’s full-bodied and rich with blue and black fruit notes saturating the palate. The tannins are refined and well-integrated into the wine. It maintains elegance while staying true to its hallmark style. Owner Juan Mercado began this brand with the 2003 vintage and released it the year before I moved out to Napa Valley. On one of my first work trips while still living on the east coast, I tasted Realm’s debut vintage and since then, I have been a fan.
