While once thought of as a secondary region, Barbaresco was revitalized in the mind 1900s, largely due to the efforts of Produttori del Barbaresco. While Produttori was originally founded in 1894 under the name Cantine Social, it was disbanded in the 1930s under fascist rule. In 1958, the priest of the Barbaresco village brought together 19 Nebbiolo producers to attempt the same theory—together, these growers were stronger than apart. None of the tiny growers were producing enough wine on their own or had the knowledge to gain traction in the market, but if they combined resources to make the best wine possible, their village could thrive. Thus began the most high-quality wine cooperative to this day. The Muncagota site is laden with calcareous limestone, lending this wine an elegance and mineral freshness, which is a delightful tension with the powerful tannins of the Nebbiolo grape. The wine is classically aged for 3 years in large oak casks and an additional 8 months in bottle. 2016 is a vintage note to be missed. This is a dynamite centerpiece with charcuterie or wagyu.
