This Domaine, established in 1896 by the Avril family, who was instrumental in the creation of the appellation, is currently run by Paul Vincent Avril. While there is a history of exceptional quality, critics and consumers concur these wines are reaching new heights. Paul Vincent’s story is reminiscent of that of Napa’s Maya Dalla Valle. Although slated to inherit exceptional estates, both these winemakers went to great lengths to ensure they were ready for the challenge, receiving classical educations and earning their roles in winemaking history. Paul Vincent’s resume includes time at Château Mouton-Rothschild.

Today, Clos des Papes possesses 24 parcels, all farmed by hand. Paul Vincent keeps yields low and destems all grapes. A traditionalist at heart, he uses no new oak and bottles the wines unfiltered. The final blend is 65% Grenache, 20% Mourvedre, 10% Syrah, and 5% other permitted varieties. This is one of few estates to use all 13 permitted varieties.
