Coming from McGah’s estate vineyard on the eastern side of Rutherford, this Cabernet Sauvignon time and again is one of the best Petit Verdot bottlings we have tried. Winemaker Mike Smith has been able to use this fruit for his other winery projects but for McGah’s own Cabernet label, the Reds coming from their vineyard are worth a lot more than their respective price. Winemakers Russell Bevan and Mike Smith continue to source from this esteemed vineyard for their own single vineyard Reds but for the price. The McGah Family Vineyards Petit Verdot block produced a prodigious and compelling wine in 2015. In the glass, you will immediately notice a dark violet color followed by an intense set of aromas consisting of dark heady fruit, cedar and sandalwood spice. The mid-palate consists of firm but perfectly integrated acidity along with a ripe, rich and highly concentrated Rutherford fruit. A beautiful streak of anise runs through the middle leading to a long and highlighted finish. Consistent with the nature of this varietal, the tannins are forefront but a have a measure of finesse and polish allowing this wine to be enjoyed in its youth. Enjoy now with a decant or by letting it sit with the cork out for about a half-hour or allow it to age for 6-10 years. 149 cases were produced.
