Since their 2004 debut vintage, I've been a fan of Maybach and fortunately, forged a good relationship with vintner Chris Maybach before their first vintage release. Since its inception, Thomas Rivers Brown has been their winemaker. His efforts along with prime Cabernet from the Weitz Vineyard, located on the eastern Oakville bench, have resulted in some of the most compelling Cab in bottle each year under the Materium label. More recently, beginning with the 2008 vintage, Thomas has produced Amoenus from prime Cabernet Sauvignon fruit from Blossom Creek Vineyard, on the western hillside of the Mayacamas range in Calistoga, where the moderating temperatures of the Black Mountain Gap are 10-15 degrees cooler than on the Eastern side of Calistoga. This allows for gradual ripening and full maturation. I'm fortunate to be able to buy these library wines directly from Chris Maybach's cellar to offer you today.
