Impensata ‘Las Posadas Vineyard’ Howell Mountain Red 2019
Just released, welcome to the debut vintage of this special bottle made by Nigel Kinsman. Coined as one of the most exciting new wineries in Napa Valley by Antonio Galloni and Lisa Perrotti-Brown, the estate vineyards are located on Howell Mountain and Diamond Mountain. This 2019 Red comes from their vineyard manager's own property, Abreu Las Posadas, which is also on Howell Mountain. David Abreu is a legend for not only the vineyards he has cultivated and farms daily, but also for his own. Those fortunate enough to have access to his own fruit have made sensational wines under their own labels (Colgin, Bryant, now Impensata). A blend of 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Cabernet Franc, 4% Petit Verdot, and the rest Malbec, this wine is gorgeous- it’s rich, full-bodied and represents the best of what Howell Mountain and David Abreu’s fruit has to offer in a very good vintage. Originally meant to be an experiment detailing the similarities between Impensata’s own estate vineyard down the road and David’s vineyard in soil, climate, and exposure, resulted in this first Proprietary Red. 279 cases were made. I would jump at this opportunity to get a few bottles to cellar if you can.
Impensata ‘Engelhard Vineyard’ Red 2019
This 2019 is the debut vintage of Engelhard Vineyard from the western hills of Calistoga. It is perhaps this vineyard that began the relationship between Louis Ciminelli and winemaker Nigel Kinsman. Previously owned by the Engelhards, the 4-acre vineyard for decades was the secret source to a select few blue chip winemakers, including Bob Levy for Harlan and the Napa Valley Reserve, Thomas Rivers Brown for Hobel and to Nigel Kinsman. When Louis bought the vineyard, he entrusted David Abreu to take on the role as viticulturist of the property and bring the property to the next level of even higher quality. Rich and powerful, it is “an absolute beauty. The 2019 Red boasts all the energy, expression, and power this site has become known for and captures the essence of one of Napa Valley's most under the radar vineyards,” explains Nigel. This wine is deserving of a good decant if you’re going to open this anytime soon. 222 cases were produced.
Impensata ‘Ciminelli Vineyard’ Sauvignon Blanc 2022
A highlight of the walk-around tasting at Inspire Napa Valley’s Winter Wine & Food Fête 2023, this is one of the best California Whites to take the stage in the new year. This is the debut vintage from the home base of Impensata’s Howell Mountain estate vineyard. Tucked into the property that is mostly comprised of red Bordeaux fruit, 1.25 acres is designated to Sauvignon Blanc, Sauvignon Musqué and Sauvignon Gris. Lucky for us, we not only were able to try this wine ahead of release date but we’re also able to share a few cases with you. It is a stunning White – complex, layered with citrus notes, tropical fruit, mineral touches, it has a texture that lingers on the palate for what seems like minutes and a long, gratifying finish. It’s brilliant and I can’t wait to taste this wine in 6-8 years.
