This was the first Hundred Acre bottling that Jayson Woodbridge produced. Later came Ark, Few & Far Between and his other offerings but Kayli Morgan, in the 2000 vintage, is what launched this new winery. We were the first to take a significant position with this project when I was with Dean & DeLuca and since the beginning, we have had the opportunity to enjoy and share each vintage released. Tucked into the hillside before you head up to Howell Mountain, this vineyard gets optimal afternoon sun with just the right amount of airflow. This 2018 is opulent, fruit-driven and loaded with notes of dark red fruit, cassis, and cocoa dusting. It immediately shows its potential upon opening but will gain more complexity after letting it sit for an hour or two. As Hundred Acre explains, “There is a saying in the winemaking world- there is no such thing as an atheist winemaker. It doesn’t matter how good a winemaker you are; every winemaker knows that Mother Nature is ultimately in charge. This vintage is no exception - in Jayson’s words, ‘the 2018 vintage is nothing short of monolithic.’” The concentration, density, and texture of the wines in 2018 even surprised him.
