Harvested in the early morning on September 22nd, the 2016 G.B. Crane Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon underwent a four-day cold soak and was fermented in a stainless-steel tank for four weeks including an extended maceration on skins. Aged in 53% new French oak for 22 months, the wine was bottled on August 18th, 2017 and cellar matured for over a year. This is a quintessential St. Helena Cabernet Sauvignon and the wine’s complexity is a result of the unique location of the vineyard. Its neighbors include the famed Beckstoffer Dr Crane Vineyard, Hayne Vineyard and Wight Vineyard. "Opening with soft aromatics of a wild blackberry patch, pencil shavings and ripe fig, the nose evolves into a more nuanced mélange of violets, fresh sepia pasta and salade niçoise. Vibrant and energetic upon entry, the vintage’s elegant qualities continue with a refined mid-palate of dark berry fruits and a touch of licorice and dark chocolate. The robust tannins—a result of the estate’s alluvial soils—will develop and mature well into the next decade. While many know of G.B. Crane's owner, Dave Phinney, for his efforts when he owned The Prisoner, Papillon and Mercury Head wine labels, this is Dave's first single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon he has made. 221 cases were produced.
