It is extraordinary to have one exceptional estate vineyard, let alone two. However, this is precisely the magic behind Futo’s OV|SL, a blend from their sites in Oakville and Stag’s Leap. Winemaker Jason Exposto has been working with the winery since their inaugural 2004 vintage. His tenure has included work alongside David Abreu to plant the Oakville vineyard. He then stayed on to become FUTO’s assistant winemaker, with Mark Aubert as the head winemaker, and finally assumed the role of winemaker while also overseeing the farming. It is very rare to have a multi-faceted individual like Jason leading both arenas at an estate winery of this caliber.
The final 2019 blend includes an abundant dose of Cabernet Franc at 21% rounding out the 55% Cabernet Sauvignon with smaller portions of Merlot and Petit Verdot. The quality of this cuvée is exceptional, vintage after vintage, but the 2019 is an absolute standout with a dark fruit core, plenty of mineral, and fine-grained tannins.
