After 18 years working with fruit from this unique historic vineyard and in celebration of these historic old vines, the Edge Hill team has put together a vertical of the Edge Hill Bacigalupi Chardonnay from the 2013 to 2015 vintage. The unique history of these vineyards started in 1956, when Charles and Helen Bacigalupi purchased 121 acres of prime Chardonnay and Pinot Noir land off Westside Road. Originally planted to “field blend” varietals, the Bacigalupis replanted 6 acres to Chardonnay of Wente clone in 1964—one of the first plantings of its kind in Russian River Valley. The vineyards started to mature, and 14 tons of Chardonnay were sold to Mike Grgich of Chateau Montelena in 1973—a fortuitous event that helped shape the reputation of California wines on the world stage for the first time. These Chardonnay grapes, 40% of the total chardonnay grapes used in the Chateau Montelena blend, won the 1976 Paris Tasting. As a result, history was made. In 2000, Rudd’s then winemaker David Ramey was able to secure a small amount of fruit from the famed old vine chardonnay vineyard. Looking back at David’s tasting notes from the first vintage, we’re amazed at the thread that weaves each vintage of this extraordinary Chardonnay together. For this gift set, one bottle each of 2013, 2014 and 2015 is included.
